A-Touch Lighting & Photo Booths offers a full line up of lighting effects including pattern wash, up lights, intelligent lighting, pin spot lighting, string lights, GOBOs, stage cans, strobes, black light UV panels, lasers, foggers, hazers, the list goes on and on. We know how overwhelming all of this can be. That's why we've put together the following list of common terms and their definitions. Obviously, it would take us forever to define each and every lighting technique or to explain what function every individual fixture is capable of performing, so we've narrowed this list down to those terms used specifically in the special event and wedding industries. We hope it helps "shed some light" on your planning experience, and we're always available to help if you have any questions which aren't covered in these pages. Enjoy!
GOBO - (GOes Before Optics)
GOBO - (GOes Before Optics) - A small steel or glass disk that is placed in a source four ellipsoidal lighting fixture. This steel disk has a template (often custom monograms) cut out of the center of the disk. This GOBO is placed after the lamp and GOes Before the Optic lens to project the chosen pattern, monogram, or logo design onto walls, dance floors, etc. Steel GOBOS are a single monochrome color, although color gels may be used to give the image a different color. Glass GOBOS are rather expensive to produce, but can be done in multiple colors and tend to be much brighter and display in higher definition. Glass GOBOS also tend to be much more brilliant in color.
With hundreds of patterns to choose from, you're sure to find a template to match the theme of your special event. An extremely versatile and affordable lighting solution for covering large areas of walls, ceilings or floors in light which is both decorative and functional in nature.
PIN SPOT LIGHTING
Ideal for center pieces, cake tables, and any other items at your event which should be highlighted or featured, pin spot lighting uses a narrow beam of light to focus on stationary, or fixed, items.
STRING LIGHTS, ETC., ETC.
String Lights AKA Bistro Lights, Globe Bulbs, Italian Market Lights, Festival Lighting, Cafe Lights, the list goes on and on. These fixtures are considered by many to be outdoor only lights. We beg to differ. Not only do we use them both outdoors and indoors (over dining areas, for example), we also use them for pathway lighting on shepherd's hooks, tent lighting, around ponds, lakes, inside planters, etc.
Wuzz UP LIGHT?
Up Lights (for the most part, anyhow) are exactly what you might have expected. Simply put, they are lighting fixtures which are usually mounted on floor bases or "legs," placed near walls, columns, trees, etc., and are focused "up." Up lights are available in both incandescent and LED type lighting fixtures, each having its own benefits, as well as drawbacks. Depending on desired effect, up lights may be used with a narrow lamp lighting a tall column, they can be used to provide individual colored stripes along a wall, or using a wider flood type lamp, can be used to bathe a wall in your choice of color. The correct choice of up lighting fixture type and a proper focus can even set an entire room aglow in your desired color. Share your vision with your A-Touch Lighting Designer, and he/she will be happy to explain the pros and cons of each type and make a recommendation based on the specifics of your event.
